Tissue Salts 101: Nat Mur, Nat Phos, Nat Sulph

April 9, 2019

This blog post covers the three Natrum Tissue Salts: Nat Mur, Nat Phos, Nat Sulph.

The Natrum Family, better known as Sodium, is all about balance. Natrum Muriaticum balances salt and fluids, Natrum Phosphoricum focuses on the acid/alkaline balance, and Natrum Sulphate regulates water and waste. These three salts are incredible for ailments like headaches, swelling, depression, indigestion, arthritis and more. Let’s dive in…

As usual, we’ll break things down as follows:

Main focus: the organ systems/tissues it contributes to

Action: what the tissue salt does in the body

Mental/Emotional State: common mental states that may be a sign you need it

Called for: the conditions in which the salt is called for

1. Natrum Muriaticum

  • Nat Mur holds the ever important task of balancing and distributing water throughout the body. When it is deficient, we see excessive moisture or excessive dryness.

Main Focus: Nutrition, Mind, Head, Skin, Female Systems

Action: Maintain the balance of salt and fluids within the body.

Mental/Emotional State: Introverted, don’t want sympathy, builds a wall around grief, takes everything with a grain of salt, may have a short fuse/irritable, depressed, gloomy, fear of rejection, long concealed grief.

Called for:

  • Mental/Emotional: see above

  • Head: Hammering headaches with visual disturbances, sunstroke headache, eyes sensitive to the sun, hayfever with sneezing and clear thin discharge, early stages of a head cold (with runny nose, phlegm in throat or dry nose with scratchy eyes/sore throat)

    • Mouth: cold sores, cracks at corners of mouth, middle lip split, excessive salivation or dryness.

  • Skin: Hives (after exertion), eczema that is dry/scaly or itchy/weeping, any eruptions that cause blisters with watery discharge, general dryness.

  • Nutrition/Digestion: craves salt, verythirsty, high blood pressure, dryness and constipation with cracks around anus, loss of smell/taste, inability to pass urine/stool infront of others.

  • Female: Irregular periods due to stress, emotional upset before period, cramps, headache with decreased libido, dryness of the vagina.

    • Pregnancy: hair loss during, haemorrhoids, morning sickness, incontinence, for cracked sore nipples.

2. Natrum Phosphoricum

  • A biochemical antacid, Nat Phos is great for detoxification and general digestive health (especially when combined with Nat Sulph).

Main Focus: Digestion, Urinary, Skeletal System, any symptoms connected to acidity.

Action: Maintain the acid/alkaline balance in the body, breaks down lactic acid, keeps uric acid soluble to prevent buildup, helps assimilate fats.

Mental/Emotional State: Easily angered, over anxious, tension and fear, waking at night with anxiety.

Called for:

  • Digestion: sensitive to acid (reflux, dyspepsia, heartburn, nausea, belching, vomiting sour foods, colic in babies, babies vomiting curdled milk), for gout, hangovers, food allergies, mood changes (especially after indulging in sugar/coloured foods), blood sugar issues/diabetes with lots of thirst and urination, headaches with digestive complaints, halitosis/body odour.

    • Worms:especially in kids, accompanied by grinding teeth, picking nose, biting nails, big appetite with little weight gain, not satisfied after a meal.

  • Urinary: Cystitis/vaginitis from acidic foods/beverages/yeast/alcohol, gallstones, kidney pain, incontinence (from a cough or sneeze).

  • Skeleton: best for gout, any arthritis with acidic origins, osteoarthritis, muscle soreness from lactic acid.

3. Natrum Sulphate

  • In charge of regulating water and waste, Nat Sulph is vital for liver function, cell cleansing, and picking up sluggish system. Pairs well with Nat Phos for digestive health, and Nat Mur for water metabolism. It tends to be under appreciated, but when combined with other tissue salts it can work wonders. A few more combos that I love:

Main Focus: Mind, Digestions, Nerves, Head Injuries, Respiratory.

Action: Controls the density of intracellular fluids, helps remove toxins from body, ensures adequate supply of bile for the liver.

Mental/Emotional State: Much like a backlogged system, the mental state has an inability to let things go, slow focus, tendency to depression, heaviness, irritability. Insomnia with anxiety ridden dreams, restless sleep, depression from chronic pain.

Called for:

  • Head: excellent for after a head injury (post swelling) and any symptoms that come on after a head injury (epilepsy, asthma, blindness, depression, chronic headaches). Headaches aggravated by the sun and alongside digestive issues.

  • Digestion: for liver complaints, diarrhea in the morning, abdominal bloat, colic, thirst for cold sweet drinks, diabetes (with bitter taste, halitosis), hangovers.

  • Respiratory: Asthma that is worse from dampness, with yellow/green mucous, wheezing, tight cough, sinusitis.

  • Skeletal: Arthritis (worse in damp weather), spinal ache/stiffness, mental changes after spinal trauma, jarring falls that aggravate the joints.

As always, tissue salts and homeopathic remedies are safe to use acutely and alongside other medications. If you have a pre-existing condition, it’s always a good idea to consult with your homeopath and medical professional before starting a new regimen.
