Tissue Salts 101: Kali Mur, Kali Phos, Kali Sulph

Updated: Sep 23, 2023

The Tissue Salts of the Potassium Family, or the Kali’s, are well known for their cleansing abilities; to decongest, clear out stubborn infections, perk up the mind, and nourish the tissues. There are three to be known: Kali Mur, Kali Phos, Kali Sulph– so let’s break them down! (for a review of what we're talking about click here!)

As in the last post, tissue Salts are chosen based on the symptoms they can treat. Generally, they focus on particular organ systems, but also affect the mind (and everything else, since everything is connected!), so I've broken down each salt as follows:

Main focus: the organ systems/tissues it benefits

Action: what the tissue salt does in the body

Mental/Emotional State: common mental states that may be a sign you need it

Called for: the conditions for which the salt is called for

1. Kali Mur

  • This tissue salt is an excellent decongestant for the second stage of inflammation. In the body, Kali Mur (Potassium Chloride) joins with albumin in the body to form fibrin, a protein that forms almost all body tissues except bone. With insufficient Potassium Chloride, we end up with excess albumin – or difficult to dispel discharge coming from our mucous membranes. Hence, a great remedy for the second stage of inflammation.

Main Focus: blood, muscles, saliva, mucous membranes – white discharge.

Action: A decongestant, glandular tonic, and blood/lymph cleanser. A building agent, especially after fever.

Mental/Emotional State: Tendency to “hang on” to past hurts, grudges.

Called for:

  • Ears: for clogged ears (before flying, swimmers ear), loss of hearing in ear infection, kids who need tubes due to blockages.

  • Nose/throat: Sinusitis with runny nose, cracking in ears, white/clear mucous. Enlarged lymph glands/tonsils/adenoids, sore throat.

  • Respiratory: Second stage of condition; bronchitis, asthma, croup, sinusitis. Great for recurrent infections.

  • Digestive: for sluggish liver; where there are lots of allergies, trouble digesting fatty foods, heartburn.

  • Skin: Inflamed skin conditions that exude white/clear mucous, the membrane may be watery, (re: the albumin discussed above, Kali Mur helps remove it). Eczema, psoriasis, cradle cap, infected acne, rashes, chicken pox.

2. Kali Phos

  • This tissue salt is my go-to for the students and the thinkers, the anxious and the depressed. As a nerve tonic, it can help stop the decay of tissue, protect the nerves from the exhaustion of our day-to-day stress, and relieve the symptoms that arise therefrom.

Main Focus: Nervous system, Brain, Muscles.

Action: Protects and nourishes the nerves, calms and lifts the mood.

Mental/Emotional State:

  • For students: taken daily it will prevent the brain fatigue, exam funk, test anxiety, trouble concentrating

  • Stress, nervous, restless, sensitive, high strung mental states.

  • Anxiety and worries, especially in the elderly related to aging (falling ill, finances, insomnia, memory issues)

  • Depression without a cause, desire to be recluse and not go out.

Called for:

  • Mental/Emotional: Mental stress, see above.

  • Sleep: Insomnia, from worry or in shift workers, lots of yawning. Kids with nightmares, talking in their sleep.

  • Headaches: Nervous headaches from loss of sleep/too much work, an ache at the back of the head with dizziness.

  • Eyes: Fatigue from the computer, exhaustion of the optic nerve, dry eyes, visual distortion/halo effects/floaters.

  • Circulatory: Heart palpitations from anxiety, dizziness, vertigo, faintness.

  • Male impotence: especially following stress, where there is strong desire.

  • Skin: Hair loss, pulling out hair from anxiety. Eczema or rash from stress/anxiety.

3. Kali Sulph

  • A great one to pair with Kali Mur and Ferrum Phos, Kali Sulph covers the third stage of inflammation: think thick yellow mucous – the end stage of most illnesses, where you either get better or get antibiotics. Kali Sulph helps clear away infection and keep membranes healthy thanks to it’s knack for transporting oxygen to the cells.

Main Focus: Mucous membranes, skin, lungs, yellow discharge.

Action: Distributes oxygen to cells, protects membranes.

Mental/Emotional State: timid, shy, tired with an aversion to work, muddled thinking.

Called For:

  • Skin: Skin conditions (eczema, psoriasis, acne, fungal attacks, rashes) withscaly, flaky, dry skin, itching worse at night. May also have thick yellow discharge, burning skin. Dandruff that is yellow and sticky. Fungal infections of the nails.

  • Respiratory: End of infection with thick, yellow, mucous: Bronchitis, pneumonia, chronic cough, asthma.

  • Ear/Nose: sinusitis (end of) with thick, bland, yellow mucous. Sinus headaches. Deafness from chronic blocked mucous, thick wax.

  • Female: Hot flashes that are worse in a stuffy room. Back ache during period.

  • Digestive: Yellow stools/diarrhea, smelling of sulphur. Haemorrhoids with anal itch. For sugar cravings.
